This note combines the river tour by Koala and River Cruises with their stop at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
The river cruise is an interesting way to get to the sanctuary. There’s a prerecorded interpretative commentary which was more interesting than I had expected. While you’re not passing important attractions on the ride, you do learn about the river and city. Most of the scenery, at least after you get out of the central city, is the backyard docks of residences.
The Koala sanctuary is much older than I expected—it opened in the 1920s and seemingly has played a major role in koala conservation ever since. But keep in mind that this is essentially a zoo. Koalas are displayed in zoo-like pens and are not free-ranging in any true habitat. There are a number of others animals here too. You can just wander around and take photos, or pay for one of the shows or “experiences.” We did none of those.
Overall it was fun to see koalas, but I’m not sure I’d recommend the outing if you have other things in your list to see. This was a filler activity for us on a day layover, and for that it was fine.
