I didn't know anything about Mauritius before Jen added it to our 100 Day Adventure itinerary, though I saw some photos not much later when my friend [Lucie](https://climbhiketravel.com) visited. For the ignorant, it's a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar.
Mauritius is a colonial island, enduring multiple colonizers, and was the birthplace of indentured servitude. Today, it's one of the most prosperous African nations, even if one of the smallest. The roads and buildings seem generally modern, and the island is dotted with some very interestingly sculpted mountains and ridges. While we opted for two days' worth of booked sightseeing tours, we probably should have rented a car and guided ourselves.
