I'd love for everyone to have a personal email update list. It'd be like a cross between a [[§ Now|/Now]] page and a family holiday letter. Basically, I want a way to keep up with friends and family without relying on the algorithmic whims of social media (or because [[Social media is a highlight reel]]). I want to hear about the personal stuff that doesn't make it onto public social media but isn't "private" either. It's the stuff you'd hear about at happy hour when you get together and ask "so what's been going on?" Obviously, personal phone calls (are those still a thing?) and Zoom happy hours are great, too—but they don't scale the way this would. There are only so many free nights each week, after all, and finding a time that works for everyone can be challenging, especially across time zones. I don't have to read each issue when it comes out, but I can quickly review when I'm thinking of someone and want to see how they've been doing. I'd also be happy with what Facebook *used to* be—primarily a place to share updates about your life. Today's social media, in sharp contrast, has largely devolved to a feed of content curated by people you mostly don't know. What a loss.
