One of the best decisions we made when we decided we needed to move my dad to an [[Assisted living facility]] was paying for a 50-minute consultation with a local elder law attorney. I was initially hesitant at paying $400 for an hour's worth of advice, but it ended up saving us a *lot* of money and stress.
The attorney not only gave us a higher level view of what the requirements were for qualifying for state assistance, but she also gave us an idea to look into a VA wartime pension—which we didn't know my dad qualified for—and walk us thru some of the requirements we'd need to pay close attention to. That tip alone allows us to collect an additional $2000/month that helped bridge most of the gap between his income and assisted living costs.
We subsequently returned for another consultation two years later to verify that [[Our strategy for my mom's aging]] made sense and that we weren't missing any important details. Even though we already had a well-designed plan, she was able to talk us through a couple of sticky questions, while also providing some reassurance that we were on the right track. She even provided us a blank form for a vehicle beneficiary deed for her vehicle, which saved us time searching the motor vehicle website.
